Global Warming and Climate Change Solutions:
- Reduce Energy Use: Fossils fuels are burned to produce electricity. As it is known, the burning of fossil fuels emits greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which is the main culprit behind global warming and climate change. Reduce your energy use by unplugging any electronics that may not be in use, such as video game consoles, chargers, and computers. Turn off any lights that are not in use either. When shopping, be on the lookout for energy efficient products such as CFLs or those with an ENERGY STAR label.
- Use Alternative Methods of Transportation: Automobiles are among the biggest contributors in greenhouse emissions. Unless absolutely necessary, avoiding using cars for transportation. Walking, riding a bicycle, skating, roller-blading, and riding a bus are other options of transportation. Carpooling is another great form of transportation.
- Use Water Wisely: Water requires a lot of energy to not only be safe to drink, but to be heated. By limiting water use, the amount of greenhouse emissions can be reduced. When brushing your teeth or washing your face, turn off the faucet. Take shorter showers. If a faucet is leaking, fix it. Try washing your clothes with cooler water. If possible, buy water-efficient technology such as low-flow showerheads.
- Reduce Waste: The manufacturing and disposal of products leads to greenhouse emissions. First begin by limiting the amount of products you buy, especially those that have extra packaging. Reuse products. Instead of throwing out cups for example, repurpose them into planters. Use reusable products such as reusable shopping bags. Be sure to recycle any materials that are capable of being recycled. Lastly, buy recycled products, such as recycled paper and recycled notebooks.
- Plant Trees: Trees are important as they remove carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Plant a tree or participate in a tree planting event. Start your own garden.
- Participate in Your Local Farmers’ Market: When food is transported from various places over the country, large amounts of greenhouse gases are emitted. If you buy locally grown food from a local farmers’ market, or perhaps a grocery store, you can reduce greenhouse emissions.
